Examples Of How To Set Goals In Life

If you have had difficulty getting what you want out of life, maybe you could benefit from a crash course in how to set goals in life. Achieving your dreams is a lot like taking a journey to a destination. You need a plan or a roadmap to help you get there. Goal setting is the beginning of that plan.

Compare the Present Situation to the Future

One of the first steps in goal setting is looking at where you are now, and comparing that to where you want to be in the future. Consider a goal of getting out of debt. If you are like many people, this is a reasonable goal, but first, you need to determine the total you owe on all of your accounts. Once you have that information, you can look at the best way to approach paying down your debt.

Evaluate Your Resources

Setting goals involves looking at resources or assets you already have to help you get to where you want to be. In our example of paying off debt, resources could be the amount of money you make each week, money in a savings account, or something that you can sell to get extra funds. Once you know what resources you have, you can decide which resources to use to begin paying down your debt. Let’s say you decide to use what you earn each week to pay down your debt. Now you need to determine which steps or objectives will help you get there.

Set Your Objectives

A good first of objective or step is to stop buying on credit while you are trying to pay down debt. When you stop buying on credit, you automatically create a situation where your debt will stop growing.

Next, as you make your regular payments on other accounts, consider paying off smaller debts first. Let’s say you owe a balance of $120 on an account and you have been paying $25 every month toward that balance. If you can double that payment and get rid of the $120 debt quickly, you will have an extra $25 that you can start paying toward another bill. Suppose you have an account that has a balance of $300, and you have been paying $30 per month on that account, now you have an extra $25 to pay toward eliminating that debt. If you continue this trend, eventually, you will pay off all your debt.

Another Example of Goal Setting

Weight loss is a popular goal for many people, but it is often difficult because when people try to lose weight, they set unrealistic goals such as this one: “I want to lose 50 pounds.” Again, it is best to approach this type of goal by breaking the task into small steps.

Most experts say that losing weight requires cutting back on sugary, high-fat foods and exercising more. They also recommend losing no more and 1-2 pounds per week. Here is how the goal and objectives might look for losing weight:

I want to lose 1-2 pounds per week. To accomplish this goal, I will:

1. Replace sugary drinks with water
2. Walk at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
3. Take my lunch to work rather than eat fast food every day.

By implementing these steps you can see how it can be possible to reach the goal of losing 50 pounds, but in a way that is not discouraging or overwhelming.

These are two examples of setting goals in life. Successful goal setting requires planning and taking small manageable steps toward what you wish to achieve.
